Interview with Jerry Royster

Hello!
Hello!
How are you?
Fine , Nice to meet you!
Nice to meet you also!
How was your last weekend? It was the Choo Seok, Korean traditional (holiday)..
It was great. Yesterday I got a chance to experience little bit, share a little bit of them with team and players.ahh...
Have you tried Song Pyun, the Korean traditional rice cake...
Well I had it, they gave me a stack about 8 or 10 of them, the other night, I was a little afraid of it, but I did take a bite..
Was it great?  Yes, it was great, it was very very good...

-----------------------

Well, I think people were little confused about how we were going to play a baseball. Since we got off such fast start going 12 and 4. and we finally start loosing some games I think people expected to win a 100 out of 126 games, but that just wasn't gonna happen. We were really trying to adjust, our players adjust to play a new style of baseball, and it just starting come to a portion of game at this time.

So far we've accomplished everything that I was told not accomplishable, I was told that we couldn't win this year.  We probably wouldn't be able to get in playoffs, weprobably couldn't  draw a million fans, and we're doing all that, right now, you know... We are thinking about winning a championship, of course, we are, we are, not afraid of any team, that's for sure. We are playing kind of baseball, now.  that you know, that leads everone believe that yes, we can win a chamionship.

I think a lot of people because of how well we're playing, are thinking that we ought to be pushing for something else, and you know when time comes, we will. We, we're gonna win a championship if we possibly can. But, our immediate goal was going from seventh to to top 4 and get in the playoffs, and then see what happens after that.

Well, ah, attitude!  Attitude; how you go about your business?  Umm..
What attitude?

Well, it's attitude being confident. You know, knowing that you have ability to win today a baseball game.  Whether it's against the best pitcher in the league or the worst pitcher in the league, you know I tried to still be confident in the players that
they have takes to win that game, and worry about today get through today like we should then, everything would be Ok, everything else fall into a place.

I think that's the biggest difference! Biggest difference is that they know that they can trust me. And I needed to gain their trust in order to change the way they approach the game of baseball. And playing the game without fear the anyone that watch the Lotte Giants telecasted on the TV has seen the signs around our dugout that say 'No Fear' I first went up to them I walked up them and each everyone wanted to read of them, and as soon as I could I learned all of their names and got to know, not only them got to know their families, I know they don't have fear of their father and I don't want them fear of me. Because all I want to do is try to teach them how to become winning baseball.

There is change in the player, I had to learn the player, I came here not knowing any of our players. So my first approach was to give them chance to find out who they were.
Find out who they were under different circumstances. And only way to find that out was by playing in the game.  I just adapted to, to players I had. I didn't know any of them prior to coming in here.

Well, I think he is important, it is important that a manager recognizes who was playing for them as a post to the manager just doing what his philosophies are , he has to do he has to manage the team according to do players are there. It's just sticking, I've always stick with my guns. These are the players that deserved to be playing, and you know, they'll get opportunity to show they are baseball players, and

Whoever get plays, every single one of them. And I, I~
How do you find good players?  You've got them play.. you find out that you let them play and figure out what they are capable of doing, then you put them in position to be good. You don't put them in position to be fail.

Then you say everybody can be good player?

Absolutely, absolutely. You use them as a manager, how you use if they were going to help your team. They all can help your team.  They all can't be Lee Dae-Ho, but they all can be good player, they all can make our team win. And, I truly believe that. But, now all my players every one of them know exactly what their role is. That's why they were able to concentrate on that, and get better at it.

In the States, they try to bring out all their abilities, and in Korea I think they've been, the players have been inhibited in a lot of ways,  And they still make mistake, they are taken out of the game.  Ahh, if they strike out two times, they don't get the hit the third time. Um all these things do never happen, never happen in the US.

Huh, no comparison, it's a whole different ball game. Here, the fans are so passionate about their teams and about their cheering. I've come to find out that people come to the game just for the cheering... Trust me, there is no cheering that goes on like Busan, we play Busan Sajik.  There is nothing I can compare with that.

I've heard it, uhh.. and you know, I've heard it different interpretations of it, but
Do you know what that means?  From what I gather it means that you are being in the front.. the number one... I just, I appreciate it ...

Well, it's pride, it's everying we've been talking about.. it's attitude that they took into the Olympics and talking to Manager Kim before even started it.. it was, you know everyone was wondering how good they can do, but you know I've had the same stance since June. That the best players were gonna be in Olympics are here in Korea. I knew that if we were able to put together the best team that was available here in Korea that we got a chance to win the Gold Medal.   And to go through that series undefeated, and I to be honest I don't think they were given enough credit for that accomplishment. Because gold medal is gold medal that means you are the best in the world.

It was not an easy decision, but the people that asked me to do it are people that I trust and have grown the trust.  And it seemed like such a challenge that it was something I really couldn't pass up. Our vice chairman did the convincing. He told me about this job, that it was managing the team that was not very good to put in minor league... But he said that the tendency was good. He said that peole deserve little bit better than what they were getting. So whatever I could bring in new would be appreciated it, and he said in order to win it probably will take 2 or three years.. in order to get youself back in a playoffs. That right their made it challenge that I wanted it.

My next goal, my next goal in Korea, it's just to win, other than a winning a championship, I wanna get to know people, I wanna get to know Korea.

I heard you promised your fan to sing Busan Galmegi if your team goes to playoff. Do you remember? I'm gonnaa tell you, I was talked into that.  I was actually told that I was promised, and I was OK, that was actually before even the season started and the Mayor, Mayor came out and mention that he would do it if I would do it.
Why don't you try for exercise? Oh, my Godness, you know what?  Everyone asks me that ... everyone always asks me that practice on their show but ... unfortunately, if I was better prepare for that, I would, but this point, not in time. I would embarrass myself, but prior to actually embarrass myself in front of the thirty thousand people will be there when I sing that song...

Actually in our show the last question isn't the same question everyone to ask, the question is what's your favorite song? My favorite song is sung by singer name is Seal, and I dedicated the song to the people of Busan, to the fans of Busan, and it's called 'Crazy'.. You never gonna survive in this world unless you are little bit crazy. Our fans are little crazy, and our team is little crazy actually... right now...
