Hi this is John Michael with Expert Village.  Today we’re gonna be talking about how to buy a used car.  In this segment, we’re gonna talk about the mechanical worthiness of used car.  

Remember that anytime you’re buying a used car whether it’s from a private party or dealership, it’s always in you best interest to have the car inspected by a mechanic whether or not it’s a dealership or a mechanic that you know. 

Please spend some time and making sure that new used car that you’re trying to buy has mechanical worthiness to last you for many years, especially if you have it financed, because there is nothing worse than you’re owning a car that you have to pay for every month and ends up in a service station immediately. 

So remember, have that used car checked out by a mechanic to make sure that it’s worthy of your purchase

How do I know when a sentence is completed in speaking English?

빠른 속도로 말하는 사람의 문장들을 듣다 보면 아주 쉽게 문장의 끝을 놓침으로 인해서 다음 문장의 주어와 동사를 잊어먹고 결국 전체적인 스토리를 놓치는 경우가 비일비재 합니다.  그러면 어떻게 하는 것이 가장 효과적으로 문장을 쫗아 갈수 있을까요? 

제일 바람직한 방법은 역시 말하는 사람의 논리를 이해하는 것입니다.  그러나 역시 이것은 완전히 알아 들을 때 이야기니 보다 실질적인 요령은 말하는 사람의 ‘호흡’을 이해 하는 것입니다. 

아무리 가수 이승철님이 호흡을 길데 가져간다 하더라도 언젠가는 숨을 쉬어야 합니다.  보통 우리가 말할 때 중간에 숨을 쉬지요?  이를 역 이용하는 겁니다.  마이클의 이야기를 완전히 이해는 못하더라도 중간 중간에 그의 말이 언제 끊어지는지를 잘 파악해 보세요. 

Practical Grammar

미국 사람들은 대부분 하나의 문장을 길게 만들지 않습니다.  주어+동사+목적어를 기본으로 중간에 한두개의 관계대명사로 짧은 문장을 이용해서 보충설명 하는 선에서 끝이 납니다.  이 비디오의 마이클은 상당히 문장을 길게 가져가는 경향이 있습니다. 그래서 어쩌면 내용이 이해는 되지만, 받아쓰면서 상당히 헷갈릴 여지가 많은 문장을 구사합니다.   

예를 들면,

이렇게 두개의 문장으로 나누어 놓으니, 말하기도 쉽고 알아듣기도 쉬울것 같지요? 언제나 주장하듯이 문장이 좋으냐, 나쁘냐는 문법에 맞는냐 아니냐 보다, 이해하기 쉽게 문장을 만드느냐 아니냐가 훨씬 더 중요한 요소라고 생각 합니다.

오늘은 어려운 단어들은 없지만 중요한 단어 (inspect) 하나를 골라서 오늘의 비디오 주제와 관련해서 집중적으로 파헤쳐 봅니다.

(보통 차 주인들은 potential buyer가 자신의 정비사가 있는 공장으로 차를 몰고 가는 것을 허용합니다만, 반드시 이런 표현으로 현 소유주의 허가를 받아야만 합니다.  이런 구두 허가 없이 차를 몰고 갔다간 바로 경찰에 연락이 가서 아주 곤란한 경우가 생길 우려가 있으니 조심하시길…)    

How often should I have a car inspected?

Every time you buy a used car, you should go through an inspection by an authorized inspector. 

(보통 중고차를 사는 buyer는 반드시 state inspection을 받아야만 합니다.  그래서 자동차 가격을 흥정-negotiation- 할 때 잘못된 부분의 수리를 요구하거나 그 만큼 자 가격의 하락을 요구할수 있습니다.  그래서 pre-inspection이 그만큼 중요한 것이지요.
