내일이면 (1월 20일) 미국의 새로운 대통령이
취임하게 됩니다. 그리고 물론 헌(!)
대통령 조지 부시는 백악관을 떠나게 되는 것이지요. 이때 쯤이면 항상 떠나는 대통령에 대한 조크와 함께 약간의
조롱을 섞은 여러가지 말들이 돌아 다니게 되는데, UCC 시대에 맞추어 Howcast 라는 유튜브 채널에서 재미있는 동영상을 올렸기에 이를 올려 봅니다.
동시에Howcast에서 제공하는 미국대학과 관련된 비디오로 이번주의 주제로 삼았습니다. 대부분 오늘 들어 보는 나레이터의 목소리로 진행이 되고 중간에
여성 나레이터의 비디오가 하나 올라올 예정 입니다. 메인 남성의 발음과 음성을 들어보니 진행이 상당히 빠르고 호흡을 길게가져 감으로 해서 처음 듣는 분들에겐 상당히 어렵게 느껴질 우려가
있습니다.
그러나 일주일 동안 부지런히 이 사람의 호흡과 발음 그리고 말하는 속도의 변화패턴을 익혀 보시면, 두세개의 비디오를 듣고난 후면 분명히 자신의
귀가 많이 적응 되어 있음을 느끼시게 될 것입니다.
그동안 매일 오셨던 분들은 어느정도 눈치 채셨겠지만 이곳에 올리는 비디오는 다양한 사람들의 음성을 다양한
주제와 상황에 맞추어 자신의 귀를 실전용으로 훈련 시키고자하는 목적이 강하게 있으므로 매주 새로운 주제와 달라지는 음성에 적극 적응하려는 노력이
필요합니다. 자 그럼 들어 갑니다….!!

Sure, you wanna leave the White
House with dignity, but you also wanna leave with lots of free stuff. And maybe leave a few surprises for next guy (1. _____).
You will need // sticky fingers, a sense of humor, and feelings of entitlement.
Step 1: sneak out of a few valuables. If you (get) caught, say you thought
the stuff was given to you // personally,

presidential appointment or party. That way, he won’t make a fuss that is

your living room.

Step 3: make your mark on white house. Bring

leave them in all the bath
rooms. If you like the replacement, have

your successor special // by telling them everything your wish
you’ve known when you took office.
Step 6: call the red phone at 3 AM on the
new president’s first morning in
office and say the VP just staged to coop.

- 우선 전체적으로 이 친구의 말하는 속도가 상당히 빠릅니다. 만약 실재 회화에서 이런 속도로 말하는 사람과 대화를 하게 될 경우, 본격적인 대화에
앞서 저는 우선 이렇게 양해를 구합니다. Would
you please slow down your talk a little bit? It’s hard for me to follow you! 이러면 보통 친절한 미국인들은
Sorry, I will slow down (for you) 정도로 응답해 줄것입니다.
물론 습관을 바로 고치기는 어려워서 한 두어문장 뒤에는 곧바로 원래의 속도로 돌아갈 확률이 높습니다. 하지만 최소한 2-3 문장 정도의 말을 들으면서 그 사람의 속도와 호흡, 발음, 강약의 특성, 그리고 리듬감을 바로 머리속에 받아들이며 점점 빨라지는 상대의 말에 자신의 귀를 훈련시킬 시간적 여유를 벌수 있습니다.
- maybe leave a few surprises for next (1. _____). 여기 들어갈 말을 알아 들으셨나요? 정답은 guy or gal 입니다. 듣기가 까다롭지요? 이렇게 혀를 팍팍 굴리는 단어는 더 어렵게 느껴집니다. 특히 –r, 과 –l 발음이 서로 연결 되어 있을 경우는 더 힘들지만, 이젠 이런 단어들이 연결될 때 어떻게 들리는지 귀에 훈련을 시키시면 앞으로는 더 잘 들을수 있게 되는 겁니다.
gal은 여성을 뜻합니다.
guy의 반대말.

as oppose to, 여기서는 as oppose가 하나의 단어로 들려서 ‘애즈 포즈’ 정도로 들립니다만, -s뒤의 –o
발음이 거의 생략되는 현상 입니다.
- papers printed with their faces, 어렵게 느껴지는 부분이 바로 이 printed with을 워낙 빠르게 발음해서 ‘프린트윗’으로 들립니다. 하지만 자세히 들어보면 ‘프린티드윗’으로 정확히 발음해 주고 있습니다.
- the person made (3.____) defeated 가 정답 입니다. Made의 –de와 defeated 의 –de가 겹쳐 하나의 –de 만 발음이 되는 것이지요. 즉, 오바마가defeat 한 메케인의 얼굴이 프린트된 화장실 휴지를 의미합니다. 물론 부시가 그러지는 않겠지만
이게 미국인들의 조크입니다.
