English Grammar & Punctuation : What Is a Semicolon?

What is the Semicolon anyway, and when do you use it?  The Semicolon is used pretty much when you want someone to take an extended pause.  Let’s take a look at an example.

Matt likes blues Semicolon however, George enjoys country.  In this case you’ll see Semicolon here and this is basically used to bring two independent clauses together.  And most of time when you use the Semicolon, it’s basically to give the reader another reason to pause.

When you have to related the phrases like these sentences, it’s OK to go ahead to put a Semicolon in here.  In a good way to remember it is whether or not you should use Semicolon.  You know when you’re telling the reader pause, when you’re writing out the sentence, just try to think of in your mind OK these two sentences should be able to survive on their own.  And if you take a look here, they do.  Matt likes Blues, and George enjoys country.

So remember you use a Semicolon, most of the time where you can also use a period and if you can do these things and still make a sense.  You can use Semicolon without worry.

Hope this helps, I’m Page Carerra, Happy Writing.
