English Grammar - Are you bored or boring? (3:30)

POINTS TO STUDY

  • My or someone else’s feeling = -ED
  • Describing someone or something = -ING

오늘은 새로운 ESL 선생님인 레베카의 강의로 쉽게 헷갈릴수 있는 접미사인 –ED/-ING의 사용법에 대한 강의를 들어 봅니다.  이전에 제니퍼샘의 강의를 들었지만 레베카의 강의가 좀더 쉬울수도 있겠다는 생각에 올립니다. 제니퍼샘과 달리 발음과 말의 속도가 조금 빠른 편이지만 보다 현실적이라는 것이 저의 생각 입니다.

SCRIPT, LISTENING TIPS, & GRAMMAR

Hi, I’m not James, I’m Rebecca.  But, anyway, here we are / for another / grammar lesson.  All right?  Today, we’re gonna talk about something which confuses a lot of students / and actually really important.  Because if you make a mistake, you can be say something / pretty / unpleasant about yourself, and I don’t think you wanna do that.  OK?  Good.

So, let me explain. Here we are, two little words.  Bored-boring. Are they different? Are they the same?  If I tell you, he is boring / or he is bored, is there a difference in that?  Or we’re still if I tell you / I’m bored / or I’m boring, is there a difference?  I hope you’re saying yes / because there is a big difference. All right?  There is really big difference.  Let me tell you what it is.

If I tell you I’m bored, I’m describing / how / I’m / feeling.  Right?  I’m feeling bored / because / something / is / boring.  It could be that / book is boring, the movie is boring, this lesson is boring, but that’s just an example, I know it’s not.  The lecture is boring, anything, OK?  So the thing you’re describing / is / with the –ING.  The way you are feeling / that word ends with –ED.  So I feel bored, because / the movie / is / boring.  All right? the same with these.

I’m interested / because the play / was interesting. I felt frustrating / sorry, I felt frustrated / because / the exam / was frustrating.  All right? Again / the thing you’re describing with the –ING, the way you are feeling or the way someone is feeling / is with the –ED. All right? I felt excited / when I went / to the amusement park / because the rollercoaster / was really / exciting.  Or, I felt frightened / when I went there / because / the rollercoaster / was terribly frightening

So remember, when you’re describing someone / or something / else, you use the –ING. When you talk about the way / you or somebody else’s feeling, you use the –ED.  A little lesson, but I hope / it will go long way / to keeping your reputation intact / and make it sure / that you always say / what you really want to say / and not / insult yourself by mistake / by using / the wrong expression. OK?

All right!  Take care, all the best with your English, and if you’d like to / give us any comments, or ideas, or suggestions / for future lessons, or anything that you have problem with, feel free to visit the / forum that we have / at EngVid, so go to www.EngVid.com.  All right?  Hope to see you there, Bye for now!

  • 쭉 들어본 느낌이 어떻습니까? 그동안 들어온 제니퍼샘과는 많이 다르지요사실 레베카샘의 말 속도가 제니퍼샘 보다는 빠르지만, 역시 여전히 의도적으로 느리게 발음하고 중간에 의도적으로 많은 숨표로서 강조를 해주는 편입니다그런점에서 레베카샘도 좋은 선생님인듯 합니다

  • about yourself, and I don’t think you wanna do that.  레베카샘의 강의 특징중 하나가 여기서 처럼 굉장히 느리게 가다가 갑자기 속도가 빨라지는데 있습니다이렇게 속도의 완급이 갑자기 변하면 순간적으로 문장을 놓치는 경우가 발생 하지만, 설사 놓쳤다 하더라도 쭉 듣는 순간 당황하지 마시고 급 무시하시고 다음 문장에 집중 한다는 거, 잊지 마세요~~

  • Or we’re still밑줄친 부분이 마치 워ㄹ로 들립니다이런 낯선 발음에 현혹 되지 마시고 문장의 뜻에 집중하세요~~

  • there is a big difference 보통 be동사는 작게 발음 하거나 거의 들리지 않게 발음을 하지만 여기서 처럼 차이가 있다의 무었이 존재함을 강조 할 때, 의도적으로 be 동사에 강세(stress)를 주게 됩니다

  • It could be that / book is boring 레베카는 It 을 I 로 발음 하는 실수를 하지만 우리는 It 으로 알아 들어주는 센스…

  • the way someone is feeling / is여기서 숨표는 주어절의 끝났음 알려주는 pause입니다.

PREVIEW FOR TOMORROW

내일은 Jennifer Anistone의 인터뷰를 들어 보겠습니다.  그동안 상당히 비현실적인 속도의 영어를 들어 봤으니 이제 현실영어를 접하면서 어떤 차이점이 있는지 알아보는 것도 좋으리라 생각 합니다.
