GRE – Graduate Record Examinations
The Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) General Test measures verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, and critical thinking and analytical writing skills. The GRE? Subject Tests gauge undergraduate achievement in 8 specific fields of study.
GRE는 미국 대학원 석박사 과정으로 입학하려면 TOEFL과 함께 거의 모든 대학원에서 요구하는 성적입니다. GRE의 종류는 크게 두가지로 나누는데, General Test 와 Subject Test 로 나뉘는데 subject test 는 학교와 학과에 따라 요구하는 경우와 그렇지 은 경우가 많으므로 학과에 직접 문의하는게 가장 빠르고 정확합니다.
General Test는 다시 세개의 sub-section으로 나뉘는데, 아래의 링크를 가시면 자세하게 나와 있습니다.

What Is It?
The GRE? General Test measures verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, critical thinking, and analytical writing skills that are not related to any specific field of study.
Verbal Reasoning — The skills measured include the test taker's ability to
- analyze and evaluate written material and synthesize information obtained from it analyze relationships among component parts of sentences
- recognize relationships between words and concepts
Quantitative Reasoning — The skills measured include the test taker's ability to understand basic concepts of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and data analysis reason quantitatively solve problems in a quantitative setting
Analytical Writing — The skills measured include the test taker's ability to
- articulate complex ideas clearly and effectively examine claims and accompanying evidence support ideas with relevant reasons and examples
- sustain a well-focused, coherent discussion control the elements of standard written English
보통 이전엔 Verbal 과 Quantitative (수학) 점수만 합산을 해서 사정을 하는데 사용했지만 요즘은 Analytical 도 합산하는 학교가 있다고 들었으니, 역시 목표학과에 접촉이 가장 바람직 합니다.
물론 수학은 영어로 문제가 출제되지만, 한국의 고등학교 수학수준 정도면 거의 만점 (800점) 가까이 받을수 있습니다. 그런데 영어가 장난 아니게 어렵습니다. 토플 단어보다 한단계 더 높은 수준으로 보면 적절합니다. 전 수학은 790점 받았는데 영어에서 겨우 500점 넘겼습니다.... -_-;; 미국 아이들도 평균이 600점 초반이니 열라게 어렵다고 보면 됩니다. 특히 analogy 부분에서는 전 거의 연필 돌려서 찍었다는....
미국으로 유학가는데 준비해야할것들 차근차근 알려주시면 너무 고맙겠습니다
1. 학점은 무조건 높을수록 좋습니다.
2. 학부시절 미국 유학 출신 교수님께 미리 유학 계획을 말씀 드리고 조언을 구하면서 교수님들의 연구에 적극 참여 하시기 바랍니다. 잘 받은 추천서 몇장이 성적이나 영어 점수를 상쇄 하기도 합니다.
3. 영어 공부 많이 해서 TOEFL 과 GRE 점수를 되도록이면 많이 받길 바랍니다. 물론 이런 점수들은 하한선만 넘기면 거의 차이 없지만 하한선 이하면 학교측에서 사정 자체를 하지 않는 경우가 많습니다.
4. 영어 Listening과 Writing에 무진장 공을 많이 들여서 준비를 철저히 하시기 바랍니다. 처음 미국 오면 한두학기 정도는 강의를 알아 듣는데 어려움이 있기 때문에 거의 독학으로 따라 가야합니다. 이때 가장 중요한 것이 작문 실력 입니다. 말발로 때우기 까지 글발로 때울수 있으면 말발은 한 일년 강의 따라가면 쫏아갈수 있습니다. 그동안 살아남기 위한 도구가 바로 글발이라는 사실....
