POINTS TO STUDY

  • Learn the correct stress of some names of the US states (O-W)
  • Practice and listen how another native speaker pronounces the name of the US states

    오늘이 미국의 州명과 주도의 이름을 이용하여 단어의 강세를 공부하는 마지막 날입니다. 다음주에는(advanced) stress pattern을 공부하시는데 이번주에 배운 단어의 강세가 큰 도움이 될 것입니다.  오늘도 다른 사람이 나와서 인터뷰를 하니, 앞쪽이 지겨우신 분은 뒷쪽의 인터뷰 부분만 보셔도 좋겠습니다.  인터뷰는 4:48 부분에서 시작 됩니다.

2-syllable patterns.

First pattern is placing stress on the first syllable.  As in, Jackson

Second pattern is placing stress on the second syllable.  Vermont

 

3-syllable patterns.

One pattern is placing stress on the first syllable.  As in, Idaho

Stress might also be placed on the middle syllable.  Atlanta

Another pattern might be to stress on the final syllable.  As in Illinois.

 

Here are two 4-syllable patterns

You might see stress placed on the second syllable. As in Annapolis

Or you might find stress placed on second to last syllable.  As in California

So you see that we don’t put stress much on New, the greatest stress is on the syllable following New.  Listen again.

Have you visited to all 50 states?

No, I haven’t.  I’ve been through a couple of them while flown over them, but I haven’t them all.

 

What’s your home state?

Pennsylvania.

 

What’s the capital of Pennsylvania?

Harrisburg.

 

How did Pennsylvania get its name?

It was named after William Tan who was Quakers and one of the first settlers come here. 

 

Can you tell me any interesting fact about your home state?

Philadelphia is that was the original capital of the United States.

 

Do you know which states were the 13 colonies?

Pennsylvania, Virginia, Delaware, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Islands, Connecticut, and New Jersey. 

 

Is there a state you’d like to visit?

I’ve been to California before, but I’d wanna definitely go again, so California. 

 

What do you think is the most beautiful state?

Most beautiful state would probably be, I would think of Washington. 

 

Why?

Because there’s a lot of mountains, also around a coast, so you get the mountains and the ocean.

 

Do you know which state is 50th state?

Hawaii.

 

And 49th state?

Alaska.

 

Which states do you think have interesting names?

North Dakota and South Dakota: They are both named after tribal Indians after Sioux Indians.


What’s the largest state?

I’d believe the largest state is Alaska.

 

What’s the smallest state?

State of Rhode Island.

 

What do you know about Texas?

Everything is bigger in Texas.
