Lesson 2c – Conditionals - UNLESS

 

We’re still dealing with factual conditionals, and I’d like to tell you about the word that causes confusions for some students.  That word is ‘unless’.  I have said that the conditionals can be made with other words besides IF. Unless is one of them.  So let’s take a look / at how we use this word. [see screen and listen Jennifer]

 

Ok so let’s try this exercise.  I’m going to show you / a future factual conditional / with IF.  I want you take a moment / and think how to reword it / using unless.  I’ll then tell you correct answer.  For example, here’s number one. [see screen and listen Jennifer]  How can we reword the sentence using unless?  [see screen and listen Jennifer]  OK?  Let’s try a few more.  Here’s number two. [see screen and listen Jennifer]  Note that the broke means (that) you have no more money. [see screen and listen Jennifer] 

 

·         reword = rephrase, rewrite, write with different words

• 마지막 예문이 의미심장한 문장이라 좀더 연구해 보도록 하겠습니다.
  ”You’ll never gain anything unless you risk something.” 즉, 뭔가를 얻기 위해서는 위험을 감수해야 한다는 말이지요.  이걸 다른 짧은 표현으로 보면 “No pain, no gain!” 고통 없이 얻는것도 없다는 말입니다.  그래서 이런 표현을 한번 만들어 보았습니다.
  
  You will never be good at English unless you (if you don’t) invest your time for studying every day!  It’s up to you whether believe in it, but only time will show you the truth that can be either sweet or bitter to your future. Half an hour of studying a day will change your future completely…!  I guarantee it!
