English Grammar & Punctuation : Do You Use a Semicolon Before or After Conjunctive Adverbs?

You know grammar writing can be pretty tricky at time, just especially when you’re trying to remember all the rules to dos, don’t what to do in a sentence.  Today we’re gonna take a closer look at semicolons whether or not to use before or after conjunctive Adverbs.

We’re (gonna) take a closer look at conjunctive Adverbs and semicolons.  Let’s take a look at a sentence to pretty much guide through it, shall we?  If you think about conjunctive Adverbs, that actually join two independent clauses together here.

Matt likes blues; however, George enjoys country.  See you can see that we have two independent phrases here and the conjunctive Adverb, however is what is going to bring these two together.

Usually a conjunctive Adverb isn’t strong enough to join two clauses here by just a comma, and that’s why we have the semicolon here because it does give you an extra reason to pause, and pay attention to what’s going on in the sentence.

So if you have two independent sentences.  You wanna join them together; think about conjunctive Adverbs, like however or whether or not, if you might see these examples somewhere in your sentences.

Happy writing, I am Page Carerra.
